Jan Levine: Impacts of a flat cap with no amnesty buyout or buyout forgiveness on NYR Lots of decisions loom when offseason arrives

We’re in this situation bc of bad contracts and buyouts. Stop the buyouts. Take away Shattenkirks dead space and we’d be fine, why deal with these same questions 2 years from now bc we buy more players out. Add a pick to some of these guys and get rid of them, forget the buyouts.

I am truly surprised that amnesty buyouts do not appear to be on the horizon. However, the Skjei trade relieved a lot of our problems against the cap ceiling for next year. I have mentioned numerous times a trade of Smith ( and now Andersson ) to Ottawa makes too much sense for both sides. Getting Smith off our cap will allow us to comfortably re-sign all of our RFAs to good contracts. In any case, Fast looks to be a goner. He represents a luxury that we can no longer afford and will simply be replaced by Kravtsov ( or Lafreniere! ) on the roster.

An amnesty buyout would just mean cash, no cap hit. I hear you on buyout, but in the case of Staal, Smith or Lundqvist, because only one year remains on their deals, the hit is just for two years. Not the ideal, but an option none the less.

I think as fans we’ve over valued Gorgiev. There’s no way you give a back up goalie 2 mil. If another team thinks he can be a starter, then trade him. AND buy out Lundqvist. Sign Berube to another league minimum contract or bring up Huska. Smith isn’t going to Ottawa. He has partial ntc. Same with Staal. Maybe Lundqvist does team a favor and retires. Trade candidates: DeAngelo, Strome, Gorgiev, Anderson.... any combo of these guys plus maybe prospect and picks to get a legit 2C.

Strome is gone. Time for Chytil to move up.

With Nils staying another year in Sweden anyone who wants to trade Tony D should be shanked in the neck.

Should I do it...

I think I'm going to do it...

Shoot, idk, do I really want to do it...

F it: They should keep Fast and trade Lemieux at all costs.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. He was pretty useless for the last 1/2 of the season. If he is taking penalties not drawing them, and not putting up any points, whats his purpose?

Being in Edmonton and tronna for return to play is the best decision. They do have brains after all

Fox a better all around D than DeAngelo. Can sign a cheap ufa for a year. Or just play a lefty on right side. There’s other prospects besides Nils. AdA value is high.

He was 4th overall in points for defenseman. There is no way we are getting that value back in a trade. And while Fox was awesome last year, he is not better than Tony D right now, he might be soon, but not right now

I 100% do not think they should be looking to part with AdA. Just because Fox is shaping up to be a similar player, why not have two guys that are lethal? Especially while Fox is on his entry level contract.

But, if they did plan to deal him. The return would need to be high. My starting point would be a bottom 6 NHL player, a first, and a forward prospect. I think they absolutely could get that on the open market for AdA.

Tony D's points for what his ice time was has to be insane. I don't think he was even in the top 50 for ice time. He basically had the ice time of a third pairing d man and put up top 5 points. Thats mind bottling

113th in TOI/Game for defensemen!

A stat like that works against him, imo. Makes me think, "Can he do it again?" I want him on my team when we find out.

DeAngelos ice time is effected by fact he doesn’t kill penalties. On the flip side, he averaged over 3 minutes a game on PP, where he scored 19 of his points. I’m not saying he’s a bad player, I just think he’s going to want a long term deal starting at 5mil plus. That would be over kill.

I'd absolutely give him long term 5 million a year right now

if he's asking for 6 or 7 then they just cant do it

On the #NHL hubs, West will go to Edmonton, East will go to Toronto.

Vegas was eliminated Monday because of COVID-19 rise. The hub hotel was Park MGM and entire surrounding plaza area

Same camp. 5M a year for a young guy who had a breakout year is fair. He needs to prove he can do it again to get into that 6-7M range.

If I'm him, I sign a 3 or 4 year deal for 5.25M. Sets him up for a big payday if he continues to ascend, and gives his bank account a nice $20M bump.

Re-read this every year, and it is still hard to believe: To avoid paying Bonilla $5.9M in 2000 - in part so they could invest more money with Bernie Madoff - Wilpons agreed to pay Bonilla $1.19 M a year from 2011 to 2035, when he will be 72!! Put Bonilla's agent in Hall of Fame!

“5M a year for a young guy who had a breakout year is fair“. Isn’t that what we did with Skjei? Put Fox on #1 pp and you get same production. Honestly, offense isn’t our problem. We give up more shots than almost every team in league.

I mean if you dont want to give Tony D 5 million a year, basically you want him gone

Skjei never even approached the year that Tony D was having
